The old blogs will be phased out and the all new EasyCare blog content will be found at one convenient location. Bookmark the new web address and come back often.

The new platform also allows horse boot users to submit hoof boot success stories at www.DoYouBoot.com. These success stories will post directly to the new EasyCare Blog.

We are also looking for “Guest Blog Posters” to contribute stories and blurbs that are relevant and interesting to people in the natural hoof care world. Guest authors will be compensated with schwag and eligible for EasyCare Ambassador pricing.

New Equine Podiotherapy Course Down Under

The Search for more Barefoot Trimmers and Natural Hoofcare Practitioners continues...

EasyCare receives hundreds of e-mails and calls every month from horse owners that are looking for barefoot trimmers or natural hoof care practitioners in their area. These horse owners have read about natural hoof care and are now ready to give it a try.

The problem comes when they can't find a trimmer in their area or all the trimmers in their area are booked solid. The current number of trimmers can't keep up with the demand of consumers who would like to have one or more of their horses trimmed in a barefoot style.

We continue to hear great things about a professional trimming course offered in Australia, and wonder what we can do to get them to host a class here in the States.

All of our gaiters will be updated with a new technical neoprene and a cutting edge two layer pattern that contours to the horses lower leg. We're also delighted to announce that we will once again be offering the Hi Tie trailer tie system, a fantastic product for keeping your horse safe and secure around your trailer.

These products will be available in the early part of 2010!

Jerry has been trimming for nearly 14 years. “My grandfather got me started. He did his own farrier work and I was always in the way, so he put me to work!”

Huntsinger initially started out as a traditional farrier. It was only a matter of time before he began researching better methods. “I knew there was something better; I just wasn’t sure how to get there,” says Jerry. He was already familiar with EasyCare and the product line. He began to read about Pete Ramey’s success, and the rest, Jerry says, is history.

With the arrival of winter, it’s time to think about your horse’s hooves. If your horse is shod, most Farriers will tell you it’s a good idea to pull the shoes for the winter and give those hooves a healing period. If you live in a snowy climate and you choose to keep your horse shod, you will probably need snow pads to avoid the hooves balling up with snow and borium for traction on the ice. Many people choose to just pull the shoes and take a break from riding.

The benefits of pulling the shoes go way beyond avoiding a slip in the snow. With the shoes off, your horse can attain the full expansion of the hoof, helping to de-contract the heels and return circulation to it’s fullest. With the return of full circulation a much healthier hoof wall can be attained. This will speed up progress on growing out cracks and flares. The horse will also be wearing its hooves in between trimmings, instead of getting longer and longer. This will enable your farrier to make more progress at getting those toes back or those heels down. The horses I see that are shod back to back, year afover emphasize the value of that experience and how much it enhances the ability of the barefoot farrier to see your horses problems coming long before they become a lame, and the practical advice that he or she can give you on avoiding these problems altogether is invaluable. Read more...

Our hoof boots prove themselves ride after ride, showing the equine world that the movement towards natural hoof care and hoof boots is no fad. It is a fast growing trend that is here to stay, simply because in the end it means a healthier horse.

There is no arguing with the results we're seeing with horses wearing our boots at endurance races. At the Moab Canyons Endurance Ride over the past weekend, horses wearing Easyboots dominated the event, finishing in first place all 3 days and receiving best condition awards 2 of the 3 days. Read the whole story at hootbootnews.com.

The mornings are cool and crisp, the sun is still warm, the leaves are turning and the real cold has hopefully yet to arrive. As we enjoy another change of the seasons, we have some good things to share with you. In hoof boot news, we will soon be offering two often requested larger sizes in Glue-Ons and Gloves. We also have a couple of great articles on natural hoof care this month, so be sure and read up!

Both take time, knowledge, skills, and the passion to keep learning and do the best you can for your clients and their horses.

I have been a long time advocate of the barefoot Farrier instead of the novice barefoot practitioner to people who contact me looking for someone good in their area. I’ve done this because of the barefoot Farrier’s long and personal experience with shoes, the damage that he has seen done by them, and all the things he’s tried to do to counteract their negative effects. I cannot over emphasize the value of that experience and how much it enhances the ability of the barefoot farrier to see your horses problems coming long before they become a lame, and the practical advice that he or she can give you on avoiding these problems altogether is invaluable. Read more...

by Ute Miethe

I would like to expand a bit more on the excellent article that was recently published in The Horse’s Hoof (Issue 31), “Biomechanics to a Better Barefoot,” written by Leah Hinnefeld. As a human and equine massage therapist, I specialize in horse and rider imbalances. Becoming a natural performance barefoot trimmer was simply an inevitable progression for me as a massage therapist, and it helped me to connect many of the dots, so to speak.

Horses are side dominant, just like humans. It puzzles me somewhat that this is still a rather little known fact among horse owners and horse professionals, yet many are aware of the main symptoms:

Difficulty turning into one direction

Horse prefers one canter lead over the other

Horse is stronger on one side, weaker on the other

Horse braces more on one side versus the other

Unfortunately, riders and trainer often label such symptoms as resistance, and assume the horse is wilfully being difficult. In reality, it can be very hard for a horse to perform certain movements, depending on which side is dominant, and how uneven the horse’s muscle development is side to side. Asking an owner to write 10 times “I love my horse” with their non-dominant hand—and nicely too, please—usually puts these unrealistic (and unfair) expectations into perspective for most humans. However, frequent reminders are often needed. Read more... (PDF)

The Physiology of Navicular Disease

By Rachel E. Drossman © 2006 Natural Hoofworks, LLC.

Countless horses, many of them in their prime, are euthanized every year because of Navicular disease. The progression is usually gradual, with the horse starting to be “off” during hard work, and ending with the horse unusable and in chronic pain. Usually, he is treated with a set up of pads and wedges, possibly under eggbar shoes, which seem to work for a while but eventually lose their effectiveness. The wedges become more and more extreme, until they seem to have no effect at all. Sometimes the horse is “nerved” at this point, so he can no longer feel his feet. In many cases, he is eventually put to sleep. Read More...

The journey began when a friend brought owner Sibylle Krieg a pair of Old Mac’s from the US. “It was the first boot that didn’t get lost during a ride!” says Krieg. It was then that she applied to become a distributor in Switzerland. “This was my start into the interesting world of the hoof boot business.” Read more...

We have several TE members in the field who carry fit kits to rides, who routinely answer questions, and who have been a tremendous help when various issues arise. You are our "eyes" in the field, and we really appreciate all you do!

ASYMMETRY, FROM A HOOF CARE PRACTITIONER’S PERSPECTIVE

by Steve Karshner

A big issue that seems to keep popping up is asymmetry in the horses front feet. I now believe that it is a much larger problem than people have thought in the past. I deal with it all the time and rehab these feet on a regular basis, but it is surprising to me the many different conclusions that people have come to about the condition. Let’s talk about a few of them.
Some people think that it is an upper limb problem and that the fact that the shoulders are uneven or out of balance transfers down to the feet and causes the feet to grow out of balance. This then causes one foot to be larger than the other--one usually has a high heel and is dished and the other has a long toe and under slung heel, or no heel at all, and is usually larger than the other foot.
Another camp says that the condition comes from the fact that horses are left or right side dominant, thus causing one side to muscle up more and the other to become shortened in stride, again resulting in the foot deformities we see in the condition. Somewhere in all of these reasons we also have saddles fit incorrectly or positioned on the back wrong which then shortens the stride because the shoulders are restricted in their movement. Then even have the oldest of the reasons that we were all taught in Farrier school; you leave a club foot alone because you really can’t do anything about it. I wonder how many of us have actually seen a real club foot. Read more here....

           <repeater toc='true'>

CTR'S AND HOOF BOOTS

The sport of competitive trail riding is growing and we are frequently asked at EasyCare if hoof boots can be used during an event. First, please note that event rules often change so you should always check the rules of the ride you want to attend. Generally speaking, hoof boots that do not come above the hairline (such as original Easyboots and Easyboot Glue-Ons) are always accepted. The issue comes when you want to ride with boots that have gaiters. In most cases the gaiters are considered “leg protection” and are either prohibited or can be worn if you are willing to be penalized. Many riders are disappointed to learn that their preferred boot—the Epic, Glove, Bare, Grip, or Edge cannot be used without losing points.

A fairly new organization, the American Competitive Trail Horse Association, not only allows hoof boots, but allows boots that come above the hairline (without being penalized.) We urge you to contact them and arrange for a sanctioned ride in you area!

The websites of the various CTR organizations are below. Their rules can be found online.

American Competitive Trail Horse Association (www.actha.us)
North American Trail Ride Conference (www.natrc.org)
Upper Midwest Endurance and Competitive Rides Association (www.umecra.com)
Eastern Competitive Trail Riding Association (www.ectra.org)
Middle of the Trail Distance Riders Association (www.motdra.fws1.com)
Southeastern Distance Riding Association (www.distanceriding.org)
Ontario Competitive Trail Association (www.octra.on.ca)
Want to make a difference? Call your local CTR organization and ask them to change the rules for the benefit of the barefoot and booted! Rules can be changed, and you CAN make a difference!

Numerous competitors will be riding in EasyCare brand hoof boots this year, including the 2007 winner, Jeremy Reynolds. While many riders have successfully competed at Tevis in hoof boots, EasyCare believes this will be the largest field of booted horses ever. This is the 54th annual running of the Tevis which will take place August 1 in Auburn, CA. Stay tuned for how the booted horses placed.
The following EasyCare staff will be at the ride: President Garrett Ford, Sales Manager Brian Mueller, Hoof Care Practitioner Rep Debbie Schwiebert, and Graphic Artist/Photographer Gabe Luethje.
Here’s something some of you might be able to relate to; Adversity. Long distance riders learn to overcome it, and Tammy Robinson is no different. What Tammy learned about pressing on served her well when her business burned down in the California fires and when the economy started to go south.
Tammy has almost 17,000 recorded AERC miles and really knows her market. “Going to rides, talking face to face with customers about what they want and being supportive of endurance has really helped me over the years,” she says. “Also, really knowing the products is imperative. We don’t sell anything we haven’t used. Customers want to hear your experiences, and want you to be honest and upfront about the products you sell. They know when they come to me that I will give them the pros and cons. It keeps them coming back and keeps returns down.” Read more...

Numerous horse/rider teams are winning races in them under some of the most challenging conditions. Christoph Schork, Jeremy Reynolds, Heather Reynolds, Tennessee Mahoney and Dian Woodward are among those who have consistently been in the top ten wearing EasyCare hoof boots. EasyCare's President and CEO, Garrett Ford, won first and Best Condition on the second day of Strawberry Fields!
CAN NATURAL HOOF CARE REVERSE LAMINITIS?

Debra R. Taylor DVM, MS, DACVIM at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine thinks it’s possible, and is doing the research to prove it. EasyCare, Inc. has helped by providing funds and encourages those who have an interest in natural hoof care to do the same. EasyCare’s donation helps fund intern Adam Cooner.

Dr. Taylor is recording and studying the results of natural hoof care on chronic laminitis cases. Hoof care practitioner Pete Ramey and his wife, Ivy, are currently traveling to Auburn every three weeks to expand the preliminary study- hopefully to include 50 horses. The study has consistently shown rotation reversal, increased sole thickness and profound improvement in levels of soundness. Several case horses have also demonstrated reversal of distal descent of P3. Read more and see case studies.

HOOF BOOT SUCCESS VS HOOF BOOT FAILURE

by Garrett Ford

The biggest determining factor between hoof boot success and hoof boot failure is fit. Hoof boots need to fit the hoof or the experience will not be a success. In my opinion the majority of people use a boot that is too large. Boots should fit like a second skin over the hoof.

Over the last couple months I've had the opportunity to travel to more horse events and endurance rides. At these events I've helped many riders fit boots before the event and apply boots on the trail after loosing a shoe or a boot. 95% of the time a rider has a size that is too large and explains that they can't get a smaller size on. Read more...

THE THOUGHTFUL HORSEMAN

Maria Siebrand is EasyCare's dealer of the month.
Hoof Care Practitioner Maria Siebrand is one busy lady! She began trimming about seven years ago when she decided to take her own horses barefoot. Unable to find someone to help her locally, she sought out the help of Marjorie Smith of Barefoot for Soundness. After that she picked up a rasp and dove in. She’s been trimming ever since.

“It’s important that trimmers convey information other than just trimming,” says Maria. She works very hard at educating her clients. “I think it’s extremely important that people understand what I do and why, and have all of the information they need to make educated and informed decisions regarding the care of their horses,” she says. There are many keys to being a successful trimmer. Maria says that hoof care is not about the trim alone. A good trimmer should be able to guide the horse owner in every aspect of growing a healthy hoof, including proper diet, adequate movement, appropriate terrain, hygiene, and selecting and fitting boots. She feels it’s not just about her reputation as a trimmer, but instead about the credibility of the barefoot movement in general. Read more...

Doesn't that sum up a lot? Education empowers. Education benefits you AND your horse. We encourage you to continue learning about barefoot, booting, and horse health by accessing the many tools that are available to you on our website.

Kevin’s horses, Rocky and Far, are both seasoned endurance horses and have been in iron shoes for several years.

Transition Tuesday weekly blog posts will document the process and learning curve involved in the transition to natural hoof care. Feet will change shape, boot fit will improve as feet change and the learning curve will decrease. Kevin will detail the good, the awesome, the not so good, and what happens along the way from one horse owner’s perspective. Enjoy!

It’s not too early to start thinking about preparations if you are riding or driving a horse in a summer parade. Steel horseshoes are slick on pavement and concrete and are dangerous.

Don’t risk slipping or scrambling that could leave you and your horse injured! Our boots provide great traction and Easyboots can be worn over horseshoes. We’ll help you determine the right size for your horse and you will really notice the difference! (We promise, or we’ll give you your money back.)

We want you to have a fun, and safe, parade. Pass this along to a friend who might benefit from riding or driving in boots.
